Tom Skerritt Dies at 93, Leaving a Legacy From Alien to Picket Fences

The Emmy-winning actor built one of Hollywood’s most durable careers, moving from landmark films to acclaimed television while remaining a familiar screen presence for more than six decades

For movie audiences, he was the doomed captain of the Nostromo in Alien. For a generation raised on 1980s blockbusters, he was Viper, the veteran flight instructor in Top Gun. Television viewers knew him as Sheriff Jimmy Brock, the role that earned him an Emmy Award. Now, one of the most recognizable character actors of his era is gone.

Tom Skerritt, whose career stretched across more than six decades in film and television, has died at 93. His family announced his death Thursday, saying he died of natural causes. No location was disclosed.

At a time when Hollywood increasingly revolved around franchise stars and leading men, Skerritt carved out a different path. Rarely the center of the marquee but rarely absent for long, he became a trusted presence for directors seeking authority, gravitas and quiet credibility. Across a filmography that crossed genres and generations, he worked with Robert Altman, Ridley Scott, David Cronenberg and Robert Redford while building a résumé that ranged from science fiction and drama to comedy and network television.

The Face Behind Some of Hollywood’s Most Enduring Roles

Among the performances most closely associated with Skerritt was Captain Arthur Dallas, commander of the commercial spacecraft Nostromo in Ridley Scott’s 1979 science-fiction classic Alien. Sharing the screen with Sigourney Weaver, he helped anchor a film that would become one of the defining works of the genre.

The role almost never happened. Skerritt initially declined the project, concerned that special effects might overshadow the storytelling. He changed his mind after seeing The Duellists, Scott’s feature debut, whose visual sophistication convinced him the director had something exceptional in mind.

Seven years later, another career-defining credit followed. In Tony Scott’s Top Gun (1986), Skerritt portrayed Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the respected instructor who becomes a mentor to Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise. The performance secured his place in one of the decade’s most influential blockbusters.

Other major film credits included The Turning Point (1977), which received 11 Academy Award nominations, Harold and Maude (1971), Big Bad Mama (1974), The Dead Zone (1983), based on Stephen King’s novel and directed by David Cronenberg, Steel Magnolias (1989), The Rookie (1990) alongside Clint Eastwood, A River Runs Through It (1992), directed by Robert Redford, and Contact (1997), directed by Robert Zemeckis.

In 2012, he made a brief and self-aware cameo as himself in the comedy Ted.

An Emmy-Winning Turn on Television

While film established his national profile, television delivered one of the greatest professional honors of his career.

From 1992 through 1996, Skerritt starred in David E. Kelley’s Picket Fences, set in the fictional town of Rome, Wisconsin. As Sheriff Jimmy Brock, husband to a physician and father of three children, he served as the steady center of a community frequently confronted by bizarre and unexpected events.

The performance earned Skerritt the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993. He received another nomination the following year.

His television work extended far beyond that signature role. During the 1980s he appeared on Cheers as Evan Drake, the sophisticated former boss of Rebecca Howe. Later credits included Will & Grace, The West Wing, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Brothers & Sisters.

In the latter series, which he joined in 2006, Skerritt played William Walker, husband of the character portrayed by Sally Field. Although the character had died before the series began, he remained a recurring presence through flashbacks. Years earlier, the two actors had also shared the screen in Steel Magnolias.

His final leading film role arrived in 2021 with East of the Mountains, where he portrayed a retired widowed cardiothoracic surgeon confronting a terminal cancer diagnosis.

The Breakthrough That Changed Everything

Long before Alien and Top Gun, it was Robert Altman’s MASH* that transformed Skerritt from a working actor into a recognizable Hollywood figure.

Released in 1970 and set during the Korean War, the antiwar comedy cast Skerritt as surgeon Duke Forrest opposite Donald Sutherland’s Hawkeye Pierce. One early sequence finds the two characters taking a jeep to reach the field hospital where they have been assigned.

The film became one of the year’s major successes and helped launch Skerritt into a new phase of his career, even though Duke Forrest would not be carried over into the television adaptation that followed.

Skerritt later spoke warmly about Altman’s influence on his development as an actor. Recalling their collaboration in the 2009 book Robert Altman: The Oral Biography, he remembered the director encouraging performers to take chances rather than fear mistakes.

“He made you realize right away that you couldn’t fail if you were willing to try,” Skerritt said.

An Unplanned Road to Acting

Born Thomas Roy Skerritt in Detroit on Aug. 25, 1933, he did not initially envision a future in Hollywood.

After graduating from Mackenzie High School in 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, hoping to travel and become a pilot. Instead, he was assigned administrative duties in Austin, Texas.

When his military service ended, he studied English at Wayne State University before moving west to the University of California, Los Angeles, where acting classes opened a new direction.

His screen debut came in 1962 with War Hunt, a Korean War drama that also featured John Saxon, Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford. Throughout the following decade, he steadily accumulated television credits in series including The Virginian, Bonanza, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and The Twilight Zone.

Beyond the Screen

In later years, Skerritt devoted substantial energy to causes outside acting.

He helped establish TheFilmSchool in Seattle to support emerging filmmakers and storytellers. He also became involved with the Red Badge Project, an initiative designed to help military veterans cope with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression through writing and the sharing of personal experiences.

Environmental issues were another long-standing concern. Influenced in part by his experience on A River Runs Through It, he supported Reflections of the River, a documentary series focused on the health of American waterways and the need to protect them. He also backed organizations dedicated to river conservation.

Skerritt is survived by his third wife, Julie Tokashiki, whom he married in 1998; his children Andy, Erin, Matt, Collin and Emiko; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
