Lufthansa Power Bank Fire Forces Emergency Diversion to Lyon
A Frankfurt-to-Lisbon flight was rerouted after a passenger’s external battery caught fire onboard. The aircraft landed safely in France and no injuries were reported
A Lufthansa flight bound for Lisbon was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Lyon on Saturday evening after a passenger’s power bank caught fire onboard, prompting the crew to declare an emergency despite containing the incident in flight.
The aircraft, an Airbus A321-200 operating flight LH1170 from Frankfurt to the Portuguese capital, was carrying 198 passengers when the battery ignited. According to Lufthansa, cabin crew responded immediately, securing the device inside a specially designed protective container used for lithium batteries.
Although the situation was quickly brought under control, the flight crew chose not to continue the journey. As a precaution, the pilots diverted the aircraft to Lyon and declared an emergency in order to receive landing priority.
The jet landed without incident shortly before 20:00 GMT. Passengers left the aircraft normally following arrival, and no injuries were reported.
Lufthansa said the 198 passengers and six crew members spent the night in hotel accommodations before being transferred to Lisbon on Sunday.
The airline expressed regret for the disruption caused by the diversion and the impact on passengers’ travel plans. “The safety of our passengers and our crews remains Lufthansa’s highest priority at all times,” a company spokesperson said.
The episode comes amid tighter restrictions on portable battery use onboard Lufthansa aircraft. Since January 2026, the carrier has prohibited both the use and charging of power banks during flights. Passengers may still bring up to two external batteries into the cabin, provided they meet the airline’s safety requirements.
