Luigi Mangione to Plead Guilty in Federal Case

The 28-year-old Italian American defendant is prepared to accept responsibility in the federal case over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

Luigi Mangione is prepared to plead guilty in the federal case over the killing of Brian Thompson, the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare, who was shot dead in New York in December 2024.

The development emerged during a hearing in Manhattan federal court, where attorneys for the 28-year-old Italian American told the judge that their client intended to accept responsibility.

“He is ready to plead guilty to the charges at this time,” Mangione’s lawyers said, according to U.S. media reports. Asked by the judge whether that was in fact his decision, Mangione replied, “Yes.”

Mangione had initially pleaded not guilty. He now faces a federal stalking charge, an offense that can carry a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Two other counts, including one that could have resulted in the death penalty, were dismissed earlier this year.

The agreement with federal prosecutors brings the prospect of a federal trial to an end. Jury selection had been scheduled for January.

The development, however, leaves Mangione facing a separate case in New York state court. That proceeding is scheduled for September, with the 28-year-old accused, among other charges, of second-degree murder.
