Venezuela earthquake death toll 920 as search for missing continues
Rescue efforts struggle amid shortages and damaged infrastructure as a new 4.7-magnitude tremor hits the country’s northern coast
Rescue teams in Venezuela are racing against time to locate missing survivors after two powerful earthquakes struck on Wednesday, leaving at least 920 people dead and around 3,300 injured.
Emergency operations are ongoing under difficult conditions, as international aid begins to arrive from several countries, including Italy. In many areas, however, response efforts remain slow, with residents reporting a lack of coordination and insufficient assistance.
The hardest-hit area is La Guaira, where citizens have joined recovery efforts, clearing debris by hand and with improvised tools. Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, said the earthquakes damaged approximately 1,400 buildings.
Hospitals are under severe strain, particularly between Caracas and La Guaira. Several facilities are facing shortages of water, antibiotics, IV solutions, and anesthetics, complicating treatment for the injured.
In the latest development, the United States Geological Survey recorded a new earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 along the country’s northern coast, adding to concerns about ongoing seismic activity.
