Zohran Mamdani mayor New York inauguration marks start of new administration
Public ceremony at City Hall followed by large block party in Lower Manhattan
Zohran Mamdani mayor New York inauguration takes place today on the steps of City Hall, formally launching the new administration of the 34-year-old progressive leader elected to guide the city into what he has described as “a new era” for New York.
The public ceremony follows a private swearing-in held shortly after midnight on December 31, when Zohran Mamdani mayor New York inauguration was legally completed in the presence of New York Attorney General Letitia James. Today’s event represents the official start of his mandate before the city and the public.
Approximately 4,000 invited guests are attending the ceremony at City Hall, where Mamdani will take the oath of office in the hands of Senator Bernie Sanders. The choice underscores the political significance of the moment and the progressive direction announced by the new mayor during the campaign.
Following the formal proceedings, the Zohran Mamdani mayor New York inauguration will continue with a large public block party in Lower Manhattan. The event, titled “Inauguration for a New Era,” will extend across several blocks surrounding City Hall and is expected to draw tens of thousands of attendees. The area has been closed to traffic, with large screens installed to broadcast both the ceremony and the celebrations.
The inauguration events are intended to signal a shift in priorities at City Hall, with a focus on affordability, labor rights and public services for working New Yorkers. Mamdani has described the day as a collective moment for the city, inviting residents to take part in what his team defines as an open and inclusive inauguration.
Artists, activists and public figures are scheduled to participate in the celebrations, reflecting the political and cultural coalition that supported Mamdani’s election. Organizers describe the program as a showcase of voices that represent the social and civic life of New York.
