Russian Election Numbers Face Fresh Scrutiny as Independent Analysts Challenge Official Results
Alternative statistical analyses of Russia’s parliamentary vote suggest markedly lower support for Vladimir Putin’s ruling party, disputed turnout figures and unexplained shifts in the count that benefited a Kremlin-approved opposition group
Russian election numbers face fresh scrutiny after independent analysts and election specialists produced estimates that sharply diverge from the figures certified by Moscow’s electoral authorities.
Official results handed United Russia, the party backing President Vladimir Putin, 57.8% of the vote in the election for the State Duma. A separate statistical analysis, however, suggests the ruling party’s real support may have been significantly lower.
The alternative estimate comes from a voting analysis method developed by physicist Sergei Shpilkin, whose research has been used for years to examine electoral patterns across Russia. By analyzing how turnout and party support are distributed across individual polling stations, the model attempts to identify anomalies that may indicate irregularities in the vote.
Applying that methodology, journalists at Novaya Gazeta Europe concluded that United Russia’s actual share may have been closer to 34%, not the 57.8% reported by the Central Election Commission. According to the newspaper, the findings were subsequently reviewed by two election experts.
Questions have also emerged over the performance of A Just Russia, one of the parties often described as part of Russia’s “systemic opposition”.
During the counting process, the party appeared headed toward falling short of the 5% threshold required to secure representation through party lists. Then, according to election analyst Stanislav Andreychuk, more than 60,000 votes for A Just Russia appeared within the span of a single hour, pushing the party above the cutoff and into the allocation of proportional seats.
A second election analyst, who spoke anonymously, reported a similar finding. Between 1:29 p.m. and 2:29 p.m. Moscow time, an additional 67,330 votes for A Just Russia appeared on the website of the Central Election Commission, according to the expert’s review.
The official turnout figure is also being challenged. Independent calculations cited by Dozhd TV and conducted by mathematician Boris Ovchinnikov and election expert Roman Udot place voter participation at roughly 40%, well below the 59% reported by the electoral commission.
For Udot, the gap is itself revealing. “The administrative resources have been pushed to their limits,” he said. “We know the maximum they can inject is 20%.”
The competing analyses do not alter the official outcome of the election. They do, however, paint a substantially different picture of the vote from the one presented by Russian authorities, raising new questions about turnout, party support and the integrity of the final count.
