Poland placed its air defenses on alert after a Russian jet-powered drone struck western Ukraine near the Dorohusk border crossing, though officials said no Polish airspace was breached
A Russian jet-powered drone hits near Poland border, striking an area of western Ukraine just a few miles from Polish territory and damaging facilities at a frontier checkpoint, Ukrainian and Polish officials said.
The attack occurred near the village of Starovoitove in Ukraine’s Volyn region, close to the border with Poland. Acting regional governor Roman Romaniuk reported that the blast generated a shockwave that damaged structures at the crossing.
Writing on Telegram, Romaniuk said an area near the Polish frontier had been hit in Starovoitove. He added that the explosion’s shockwave caused damage to facilities serving the border checkpoint.
The strike prompted a response from Warsaw, where Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz described the incident as “another Russian attack in western Ukraine.”
Kosiniak-Kamysz said a jet-powered drone struck Ukrainian territory roughly two kilometers from the border crossing at Dorohusk. Despite the proximity to Poland, he stressed that the incident did not result in any violation of Polish airspace.
In a post on X, the minister said Poland’s air-defense systems and military aircraft had been ready to react if required. Following the cancellation of the alert, aircraft returned to their bases and air-defense units resumed observation and monitoring operations.
