Two Unvaccinated People Die as Measles Cases Surge in Pennsylvania

Lancaster County records two deaths amid a nationwide rise in infections, with U.S. cases already exceeding last year’s total by July

Two unvaccinated people have died from measles in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as the United States faces its sharpest resurgence of the disease in decades. According to the BBC, the county has recorded 393 cases since the beginning of the year, while measles infections nationwide have reached their highest level in 35 years.

Pennsylvania health officials have warned that decades without widespread measles transmission have left many people unfamiliar with the disease and unaware of how serious it can become.

“My deepest condolences go to the families facing this unimaginable loss,” Pennsylvania Health Secretary Debra Bogen said.

The two deaths in Lancaster County come amid a broader increase in measles cases across the United States. By the first seven months of 2026, health authorities had recorded 2,777 confirmed cases nationwide, already surpassing the 2,289 cases reported throughout 2025.

The Pennsylvania health authorities have highlighted the loss of familiarity with measles as a particular concern after years in which the disease was no longer circulating widely. The warning comes as the latest figures show how rapidly infections have risen compared with previous years.

The United States also experienced a major measles outbreak last year. In Texas, two unvaccinated children died during a 2025 outbreak that infected more than 1,000 people, most of them minors.

The latest deaths in Pennsylvania therefore come against a backdrop of a sustained increase in measles infections across the country, with the 2026 total already exceeding the number recorded during all of the previous year.
