Trump wins Supreme Court backing for White House ballroom
In a 5-4 decision, the justices allow the administration to continue construction while the legal challenge to the project remains unresolved
Donald Trump has secured a temporary victory at the Supreme Court, which has allowed construction of the ballroom he wants to build at the White House to continue. The justices ruled 5-4 against a request by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to halt the project indefinitely.
In an unsigned, eight-page ruling, the Supreme Court determined that the National Trust for Historic Preservation does not have the legal authority to stop the construction. The decision allows the work to proceed while the dispute over the project remains before the courts.
The ruling represents a win for Trump, who has strongly backed the construction of the new ballroom within the White House complex. The justices did not, however, make a final determination on whether the project itself is lawful. Their decision concerns whether construction can continue while the legal proceedings move forward.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation had challenged the project in court and sought an order suspending the work. The dispute also concerns the way the Trump administration has proceeded with the construction in the White House’s East Wing.
With Monday’s 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court has therefore allowed the Trump administration to continue building the ballroom as the legal challenge proceeds.
