Dolly Parton dies at 80 in Nashville, Tennessee, bringing to an end the career of one of the most recognizable figures in American music. The country superstar’s death was announced in a video by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, according to The New York Times.

For more than five decades, Parton built a career that extended far beyond country music. She wrote more than 3,000 songs, released 49 albums and won 11 Grammy Awards, while also establishing herself as an actress, entrepreneur and cultural figure.

Her catalog includes some of the most enduring songs in American music, from “Jolene” and “Coat of Many Colors” to “I Will Always Love You.” Her 1980 hit “9 to 5,” written for the film in which she starred alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, became closely associated with working women and American workers.

Parton sold more than 100 million records and scored 25 No. 1 singles, while 49 of her albums reached the top of the country charts. Her music drew on subjects that remained close to her own experience: love, poverty, family, faith and resilience.

Among her best-known songs, “I Will Always Love You” occupied a special place in her career. Parton wrote the ballad in 1974, as she was ending her professional partnership with country singer and television host Porter Wagoner. Whitney Houston’s 1992 version later turned the song into a worldwide phenomenon and one of the best-selling singles in music history.

“Jolene,” released in 1973, was built around a desperate plea to a woman who might take away the singer’s lover. “Coat of Many Colors,” from 1971, drew directly on Parton’s childhood and portrayed poverty through the story of a handmade coat. “Here You Come Again,” released in 1977, helped establish her presence beyond the country audience.

From rural Tennessee to Nashville

Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, the fourth of 12 children. She grew up in a poor but close-knit family rooted in Pentecostal faith and religious music.

Her mother, Avie Lee, taught her traditional songs, while her father, Robert Lee Parton, worked to support the family. Parton began singing in local churches as a child and appeared on radio programs while still young.

At 13, she performed at the Grand Ole Opry, where she met Johnny Cash. Soon after finishing school, she moved to Nashville in 1964 to pursue a career in music.

Her first experience as a recording artist came through Monument Records, where she initially worked in pop. Country music, however, became the foundation of her career. In 1967, she released her debut album, “Hello, I’m Dolly.”

That same year marked the beginning of her professional partnership with Porter Wagoner. He brought her onto his television program, and the two recorded numerous albums together over seven years.

Parton’s decision to leave Wagoner’s show and establish herself as a solo artist became a defining moment in her career. The professional separation was immortalized in “I Will Always Love You.”

A career that moved beyond country music

Parton’s success continued with songs including “Love Is Like a Butterfly,” “The Bargain Store” and “Joshua.” At the same time, she developed a distinctive public image, combining elaborate blonde hair, colorful clothing and long manicured nails with a sharp sense of humor and an unmistakable stage presence.

Hollywood followed in 1980, when Parton made her film debut in “9 to 5.” The movie became a success, while its title song became an anthem associated with women’s work and labor rights.

She continued acting throughout the decade, appearing in “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” with Burt Reynolds in 1982, followed by “Rhinestone” in 1984 and “Steel Magnolias” in 1989.

Her ambitions also extended into business and entertainment. In 1986, she opened Dollywood in Tennessee, a theme park combining attractions, music and Appalachian culture.

Parton subsequently expanded her activities into television, theater, record production and streaming projects. She established Dolly Records and developed productions for Netflix, building an entertainment business alongside her music career.

Books, philanthropy and a return to her roots

In 1995, Parton founded the Imagination Library, a program created to provide free books to children. The initiative was inspired in part by her father, who had been unable to read.

The program eventually distributed more than 200 million children’s books worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Parton also donated $1 million to research connected to the Moderna vaccine.

Musically, she returned increasingly to her roots toward the end of the 1990s and into the 2000s. Albums including “The Grass Is Blue,” released in 1999, “Little Sparrow” in 2001 and “Halos & Horns” in 2002 reflected her continuing interest in bluegrass and gospel.

She also continued working with younger performers and adapting to new audiences. Her collaborations included For King & Country and Miley Cyrus, her goddaughter. In 2020, she released “A Holly Dolly Christmas.”

Parton was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, further cementing a career that had long extended beyond the boundaries of country music.

Carl Dean and a life away from the spotlight

Parton’s private life was centered for almost six decades on her marriage to Carl Dean, an entrepreneur who largely stayed away from public attention.

The couple met in 1964 outside a laundromat in Nashville and married in 1966. They remained together for nearly 60 years and had no children.

Dean died on March 3, 2025, at the age of 82. His death deeply affected Parton, who had consistently described their relationship as a private and enduring part of her life.
