Canada vs Trump: ‘History 51st state is no longer a joke, we are furious’

Ottawa no longer tolerates Donald Trump’s provocations about Canada being the ‘51st US state’. Minister Mélanie Joly reiterates the seriousness of the statements and condemns the new measures imposed by the United States

Donald Trump’s recent statements on Canada as the ‘51st US state’ have not gone unnoticed, especially after the imposition of new 25% tariffs on Canadian products. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stressed that the Ottawa government takes these statements very seriously and that Canadians feel insulted. ‘This is no longer a joke,’ the minister said in an interview with the BBC, referring to the growing irritation of the Canadian population towards the Trump administration.

Tensions over duties and the lack of dialogue with the US administration

The introduction of the new duties has further soured relations between the two countries. Minister Joly expressed her frustration at the lack of communication between the governments, stating that no representative of the US administration has contacted Canada to discuss the measures imposed. The minister denounced Canada’s unwanted ‘tariff war’ despite efforts to secure the border.

Trump’s accusations and Canada’s determination to react

Donald Trump justified his actions by accusing Canada of failing to stop the passage of narcotics, such as fentanyl, at the border. Mélanie Joly dismissed these accusations as pretexts to justify economic aggression against Canada, calling the country ‘the canary in the mine’ that could soon be followed by other nations, such as Europe and Britain. ‘We cannot let our guard down,’ Joly concluded, reiterating the need to respond firmly to the US measures.
