Eight children killed in Shreveport mass shooting after dispute

Eight children killed in Shreveport mass shooting after dispute

Police say a single gunman opened fire across three homes following a domestic incident. The suspect was later shot dead after a carjacking and pursuit

Eight children were killed in a mass shooting early Sunday in Shreveport, Louisiana, after what police described as a domestic dispute that escalated into violence across multiple locations.

Officers with the Shreveport Police Department responded shortly after 6 a.m. to reports of a disturbance. At the scene, they found what police spokesman Christopher Bordelon called a “large crime scene” spanning three separate homes.

Ten minors, aged between 1 and 14, had been shot. Eight of them died from their injuries.

According to Bordelon, the suspect fled the area after the shootings and carried out a carjacking. Patrol officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit, during which police opened fire and killed the suspect.

Investigators believe the individual acted alone. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect, but Bordelon said some of the children inside the homes were “his descendants.”

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the episode as an unprecedented tragedy for the city during a press briefing reported by NBC. “This is a tragic situation, perhaps the worst we’ve ever had in Shreveport,” he said, adding that officials are working to process the information as it continues to emerge.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who represented Shreveport for nearly a decade, called the shooting a “heartbreaking tragedy” in a statement posted on social media. He said his staff is in contact with local law enforcement as details develop.

Johnson also expressed condolences to the victims and their families and thanked Shreveport police, Bossier authorities, and Louisiana State Police for their response.
