North Korea Fires Unidentified Ballistic Missile, Seoul and Tokyo Say

Japan and South Korea report a suspected ballistic missile launch as Pyongyang continues a series of weapons tests under Kim Jong Un’s supervision

North Korea launched at least one unidentified ballistic missile today, according to officials in South Korea and Japan, marking the latest in a series of weapons tests carried out by Pyongyang.

The Japanese Prime Minister’s Office issued an alert on social media stating that North Korea had fired a “suspected ballistic missile.” The message was followed by instructions attributed to the prime minister, outlining emergency responses that included the rapid collection and dissemination of information, ensuring the safety of aircraft, vessels, and infrastructure, and the implementation of all possible precautionary measures.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency also reported the launch, citing sources from the country’s Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul.

The latest test comes amid heightened military activity in North Korea. On Tuesday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw another missile test involving cruise missiles and anti-ship projectiles launched from the destroyer Choe Hyon. The exercise was presented as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrence capabilities.

Five days earlier, Pyongyang confirmed another ballistic missile test, describing it as a “tactical” system equipped with cluster warheads and electromagnetic weapon systems.
