Mette Frederiksen responds to Trump’s ‘’ ramblings‘’ about Greenland: ‘It is not for sale’

Danish Prime Minister reiterates Denmark’s position during the European Council in Brussels

Denmark’s prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, has firmly reiterated that Greenland is not for sale, responding to US President Donald Trump’s repeated statements about his sights on the Arctic island. On the sidelines of the informal European Council in Brussels, Frederiksen stated that Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, ‘is not for sale’ and stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty.

‘We have made it clear with great support from our European partners and the European Union that everyone must respect the sovereignty of nation states,’ Frederiksen said. He added that the President of Greenland has already firmly stated that the island is not for sale.

While not hiding the strategic importance of the territory, the Prime Minister pointed out that although Greenland is becoming a crucial point for defence, security and deterrence, there is no need for alarm. ‘The United States is already present and can increase its presence. We must not panic, but we must accelerate,’ he concluded, referring to the growing threats from Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
