Israel-Hamas agreement for ceasefire and hostage release in two phases

An important step towards de-escalation of the conflict with international support

On Wednesday, Israeli, Egyptian and US officials confirmed that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages. The news, also reported by the Israeli daily Haaretz, was greeted with caution, but marks an important turning point in the conflict that has claimed thousands of lives.

According to Israeli sources, the release of the hostages will take place in two stages: first, hostages who are still alive will be released. Israel hopes that the release process can begin early next week, a gesture that could have a symbolic impact before the inauguration of Donald Trump as US president.

Details on the implementation of the ceasefire

The Prime Minister of Qatar stated during a press conference that the ceasefire will officially come into effect on Sunday. Qatar, in cooperation with Egypt and the US, will continue to work to ensure the implementation of the agreement. The Qatari Foreign Ministry specified that the ceasefire will begin at 12:15pm on Sunday.

The agreement marks a significant step towards a possible détente, but expectations of its success are still uncertain, with many watching the situation unfold over the coming days.

The phases of the ceasefire agreement (from Haaretz)

First Phase: Hostage Release and Movement of Gaza’s Population

According to Haaretz, the ceasefire agreement outlines a gradual release of 33 hostages, including women, children, the sick, and men over the age of 55, over a period of 42 days. During this first phase, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) will permit the population of Gaza to move from the southern part of the Strip to the northern region, aiming to alleviate some of the pressure on civilians in the south.

Second Phase: Release of Additional Hostages and Further Negotiations

On the 16th day of the ceasefire agreement, negotiations will begin for the implementation of the second phase, which includes the release of 65 more Israeli hostages. This phase marks a critical step toward ensuring broader humanitarian aid and further easing of tensions between the two parties involved.

IDF Withdrawal and Buffer Zone Creation

As the ceasefire progresses, the IDF will begin to withdraw into a buffer zone inside the Gaza Strip. This area will serve as a buffer between the Gaza population and Israeli border communities, reducing direct confrontations while also working to stabilize the region for future peace negotiations.
