Putin threatens West, Trump promises dialogue to stop Ukraine-Russia war

Putin threatens West, Trump promises dialogue to stop Ukraine-Russia war

Russian president announces increase in hypersonic missile production and warns US and Nato, while Trump aims to mediate between Moscow and Kiev

On the day Donald Trump, US president-elect, announces his intention to talk to Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to find a solution to the war between Ukraine and Russia, the Kremlin leader escalates his tones against the US, Nato and Europe. Putin reiterated his willingness to increase production of hypersonic missiles and issued a warning to the West, which he accused of pushing Russia towards crossing the ‘red line’.

In a speech at the Ministry of Defence, Putin promised that Russia could further develop short- and medium-range missiles and keep its nuclear forces on constant alert, especially in response to the increase of US missiles in Europe and Asia. The hypersonic Oreshnik missile, tested in November against Ukrainian targets, will be mass-produced soon.

In the meantime, Russian troops, Putin said, continue to maintain the strategic initiative on the ground, with the goal of completely conquering the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhizhia by 2025. Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov also warned of possible conflicts with NATO in the next ten years.

On the diplomatic front, Trump promised to act to stop the war. ‘We will talk to Putin and we will talk to Zelensky. The war must be stopped,’ Trump said, emphasising the high number of casualties and destruction caused by the conflict. The president-elect reiterated his commitment to a peaceful solution, recalling that during his previous term ‘there was no war and Russia did not even think about invading Ukraine’.

The future White House tenant concluded by reiterating that an agreement will be necessary on both sides to end what he called ‘the worst massacre since World War II’.
