Five Britons Held as Fairford Base Terror Probe Widens
Five Britons Held as Fairford Base Terror Probe Widens after suspicious vehicles were reported near the RAF facility used by U.S. forces. Investigators are examining multiple leads while Iran denies any involvement
Five British men remain in police custody as counterterrorism investigators widen their inquiry into a security incident near RAF Fairford, the Gloucestershire air base used by U.S. forces and considered one of the United Kingdom’s most strategically significant military sites.
British counterterrorism police said the suspects, all British nationals aged between 23 and 25, have had their detention extended until the end of the day while investigators pursue what authorities describe as a growing number of new leads.
The men were arrested on suspicion of offenses under explosives legislation and for the preparation of a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act. Detectives said subsequent investigative work has opened multiple new avenues of inquiry, prompting a broader examination of the circumstances surrounding the case.
The alarm was raised at 12:45 a.m. London time after reports of three suspicious vans approaching RAF Fairford. The base hosts a substantial U.S. Air Force presence and has previously been used by the United States for operations linked to Iran, placing the incident under heightened scrutiny from both British and American authorities.
Security measures at the installation have been strengthened in recent days as the investigation continues. The U.S. military said it is working closely with British counterparts to monitor the situation and protect American personnel stationed at the base.
“We are working closely with our British counterparts to monitor this situation, minimize impacts and ensure the safety of U.S. personnel, their families and the local community,” a spokesperson said.
Acting Gloucestershire Chief Constable Maggie Blyth said specialist explosive ordnance disposal teams are continuing to examine the three vehicles near Whelford. She confirmed that Britain’s counterterrorism police have taken charge of the investigation and will ultimately determine whether the case should formally be designated a terrorist incident.
No decision has yet been made on that question. Investigators are assessing whether the alleged plot could have any connection to Iran while also examining the possibility of involvement by other hostile states or additional suspects.
According to the BBC, the initial report came from a local resident who contacted police after noticing suspicious activity around the base during the early hours of the morning. The witness said she saw three parked vans and a group of masked men near the site.
As speculation over possible foreign involvement intensified, Iran issued a forceful denial. The Iranian Embassy in London said it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” allegations linking Tehran to the incident.
In a statement posted on X, the embassy described suggestions connecting Iran to the case as “baseless and malicious” and accused some British politicians and media outlets of attempting to draw unsupported links between Tehran and the investigation.
The diplomatic mission further argued that such claims would only fuel anti-Iranian sentiment in the United Kingdom. It also stated that the Islamic Republic reserves the right to pursue legal action, if necessary, to protect the interests of the country and its people against what it called misleading and harmful media narratives.
For now, the focus of the inquiry remains on evidence recovered from the vehicles, the questioning of the five suspects and the analysis of the investigative leads that emerged after the arrests. Authorities have not announced any decision on whether the case will ultimately be classified as a terrorist incident.
