Trump: ‘I’m going to Russia on Friday,’ but Alaska has been part of the US since 1867

The US president mentions his meeting with Putin in Alaska and gets his geography wrong. The region has been part of the United States for over 150 years

During a press conference at the White House dedicated to the crime emergency in Washington, US President Donald Trump announced his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for Friday 15 August in Alaska. However, in his speech, Trump showed a glaring geographical confusion, stating: ‘I have to go to Russia on Friday,’ referring to Alaska.

Alaska has been US territory since 1867, when it was purchased from the Russian Empire in a historic agreement. Despite this, Trump expressed embarrassment when talking about the press conference and metaphorically “returned” Alaska to Russia, forgetting the history and geography of the territory.

The meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska represents a crucial moment that could influence the evolution of the conflict in Ukraine, but the American president’s mistake immediately became the subject of comments and irony.
