Trump promises news on peace in Ukraine: “Agreement possible within three days”

After the Easter truce was violated by both sides, the US president revives his optimism: a concrete proposal is expected. Putin opens for dialogue, Zelensky calls for stop to civilian attacks

The war in Ukraine is flaring up again after the Easter truce proposed by Russia and only partly accepted by Kiev. But as the mutual accusations multiply, US President Donald Trump assures that there is a “very good chance” of reaching an agreement. “In the next three days I will provide all the details. We’ve had very productive meetings on Ukraine and Russia,’ Trump said, suggesting that the pressure exerted by Washington in recent days has borne fruit.

The reference is to the “near ultimatum” issued by the US president: if diplomatic efforts continue to be ignored, the US will back down. Now, however, the White House is reviving confidence, while ambiguous signals are coming from Kiev and Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recalled that on Saturday 19 April Moscow put forward a proposal for a ceasefire of around thirty hours, and now says he is willing to examine the Ukrainian offer to extend it to 30 days, suspending attacks on civilian infrastructure. ‘We will analyse this, we do not rule out a bilateral dialogue,’ he said, stressing, however, that Kiev had initially rejected the proposal, only to change its position ‘under external pressure’.

Zelensky, for his part, responded with a counter-proposal and a direct message: ‘We need a clear answer from Moscow. The Easter truce showed that the reduction of killings is possible’. The Ukrainian leader reiterated his government’s commitment to avoid attacks on civilian targets and pointed to the unconditional ceasefire as the first step towards peace: ‘Peace comes in silence.

The next test will be the international talks scheduled in Paris and London. Zelensky announced that a Ukrainian delegation will be in the British capital as early as Wednesday to work on a possible understanding. The immediate future of the conflict is also played out on this diplomatic front, with the wait for the “decisive news” promised by Trump.
