Beijing increases tariffs on US products in response to Trump’s tariff hike. The White House promises new countermeasures
China has announced an aggressive move against the US, introducing new 84% additional tariffs on products from Washington. The move comes in response to the US raising tariffs on imported Chinese products to 104%. The new Chinese tariffs will come into effect tomorrow at 5am Italian time, further intensifying the trade clash between the two economic powers.
Trump and his message: ‘America will be stronger’
‘Rest assured, everything will work out well. The United States will be stronger and better than ever,’ Donald Trump declared on Truth Social. The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, commented on the Chinese response calling it ineffective, stressing that China, a country with a trade surplus, will not be able to hurt the US with increased tariffs.
Continued escalation between the two powers
At 00:01 US time today, additional tariffs of 34% against Beijing were triggered, bringing the situation to a point of no return. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt reiterated that although Trump wants an agreement with China, any aggression by Beijing will be promptly met with new American countermeasures.
