Trump announces tariffs against Venezuela: punitive measures from 2 April 2025
Hit Venezuelan oil and gas trading nations, Trump accuses Caracas of sending criminals to the US
US President Donald Trump has announced the introduction of ‘secondary tariffs’ against Venezuela, which will come into effect on 2 April 2025. The measure includes a 25% tariff on any trade with the US for countries that buy oil and gas from Venezuela. Trump justified the decision by accusing Caracas of sending criminals to the US, including members of the Tren de Aragua gang, recently designated a ‘Foreign Terrorist Organisation’.
In parallel, the White House is considering a more targeted application of the tariffs, focusing on countries with significant trade imbalances, such as China, the European Union, Mexico and Japan.
