Winter storm in the USA: highest alert, millions at risk from record frost

Winter storm in the USA: highest alert, millions at risk from record frost

A state of emergency declared in several states, including Kentucky and Virginia. Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures are expected due to the polar vortex

Tens of millions of Americans are facing a severe winter storm that could bring the heaviest snowfall and coldest temperatures on record in a decade. The storm, formed in the heart of the United States, is expected to move eastward in the coming days, according to the National Weather Service (Nws).

Airlines, including American Airlines, Delta, Southwest and United, have already announced that passengers will be able to change their tickets without paying penalties, due to possible cancellations and delays caused by the storm.

Emergencies have already been declared in Kentucky, Virginia and other states usually unaccustomed to such cold spells, such as Mississippi and Florida. Weather experts attribute these extreme conditions to the polar vortex, a mass of cold air moving around the Arctic. Dan DePodwin, AccuWeather meteorologist, explained that ‘temperatures well below historical averages’ could be recorded and that the frost wave could last for at least a week.

The central regions of the United States are already facing the first consequences: dangerous road conditions, disrupted transportation, and disruptions to daily life. As the storm moves towards the East Coast, by nightfall, millions of Americans could be experiencing record-breaking temperatures, with serious repercussions for the entire population.
