Khamenei accuses the US and Israel for the overthrow of the Syrian regime

Iran’s Supreme Leader points the finger at the US and Israel, pointing to an alleged joint plan to topple Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Criticism also directed at a neighbouring country not explicitly named

In his first speech after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Ali Khamenei blamed the overthrow of the Syrian government on a joint plan orchestrated by the US and Israel, supported by an unspecified ‘neighbouring country’. ‘We have evidence that clearly shows the involvement of Washington and the Zionist regime,’ the Supreme Leader said, as reported by Press TV agency.

While not explicitly mentioning Turkey, Khamenei hinted that the role of a neighbouring country is evident: ‘It is visible to everyone, but the command centre and planning reside in the US and the Zionist regime’.

‘The resistance front is getting stronger’

In the speech, Khamenei reiterated Iran’s centrality in supporting the resistance front, arguing that despite the pressure, the movement will expand further. ‘The domination of the resistance will cover the entire region, more than before, with divine strength,’ he said.

Situation in Syria: The new transitional government

Meanwhile, Syrian rebels announced that they had taken control of the city of Deir Ezzor, with an alliance between local Arab fighters and rebel forces forcing the Kurdish forces to withdraw.

Muhammad al Bashir, representative of the transitional government, outlined the priorities for a post-Assad Syria in an interview with Corriere della Sera. The objectives include re-establishing security and stability, encouraging the return of refugees and restoring essential services.

On the new constitution, al Bashir said the details would be worked out during the constitution-making process, but reiterated his intention to guarantee the rights of all citizens.
