Susan Sarandon Slams Livestreamed Nidal Malik Hasan Execution
Speaking at Alice nella Città in Rome, the Academy Award-winning actress condemned the Trump administration’s decision to broadcast the execution of the convicted Fort Hood gunman
ROME — Actress Susan Sarandon delivered a blistering condemnation of the Trump administration’s decision to livestream the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the former U.S. Army psychiatrist responsible for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, arguing that the move reflected a broader moral decline within the federal government.
Speaking during the presentation of The Accompanist at Alice nella Città, the independent event held alongside the Rome Film Festival, Sarandon said the decision exposed what she described as a profound lack of morality and compassion.
“I think this case highlights a lack of morality, sensitivity and toxic masculinity, and shows how deep the infection affecting the U.S. government has become by exposing the depravity of the Trump administration,” she said. “To come up with an idea like that, you have to be high and out of your mind.”
Sarandon argued that the broadcast had reignited debate over capital punishment while drawing renewed attention to what she characterized as the administration’s conduct.
“The case has reopened the debate over the death penalty and brought attention back to the depravity of this administration,” she said. “Much of the world, after all, does not even practice capital punishment. I don’t think I’ve seen anything this shocking since the videos released by ISIS.”
The actress also drew historical parallels, recalling public spectacles of violence during the era of slavery in the United States.
“We have seen a similar horror before during slavery, when people gathered to watch Black men hanging from trees,” Sarandon said. “It is something extremely dangerous, terrible and deeply inhumane.”
Her remarks came during the Rome event promoting The Accompanist, where she addressed the controversy surrounding the public broadcast of Hasan’s execution and its wider implications for the debate over capital punishment in the United States.
