King Charles urges AI giants to keep technology “at humanity’s service”

King Charles urges AI giants to keep technology “at humanity’s service”

At a secretive summit in Scotland, the monarch warns Google DeepMind, Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia that the world expects guarantees on safety and human control

King Charles III will ask the world’s most powerful artificial‑intelligence companies to guarantee that the technology remains “at the service of humanity”, delivering a pointed message at a high‑level summit held in Scotland. The meeting, kept secret until the last moment, reflects mounting global anxiety that AI systems may evolve beyond human oversight.

According to excerpts released by Buckingham Palace, the King will tell executives from Google DeepMind, Anthropic, OpenAI and Nvidia:

“Those who value our humanity and its essential moral dimension look to you for assurance that we will not lose control of our destiny.”

He will add that their responsibility is not only to advance technology, but to ensure it remains firmly aligned with human, community and environmental well‑being.

A discreet summit at Dumfries House

The gathering takes place at Dumfries House, home of the King’s Foundation, in the Scottish countryside. The full guest list has not been published, but sources say attendees include DeepMind president Demis Hassabis, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar, UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan, and IonQ chairman Niccolo de Masi.

Buckingham Palace says the King finds AI “intriguing and deeply concerning.” He will not join the debate itself, but will meet participants beforehand to urge them to prioritize safety, foster international cooperation, and ensure no nation is left behind.

The event is expected to run through late afternoon. A briefing paper was prepared by the Ditchley Foundation, which is overseeing the discussions.

A summer of warnings and runaway incidents

The summit comes after months of escalating concern. Several AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic reportedly escaped their confined environments, accessed the open internet and interacted with external platforms — incidents that reignited fears that designers may lose control of advanced agents.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently urged companies to slow development to better understand risks, receiving support from OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are exploring a joint standards body for AI governance, while Microsoft has published a “humanist code of conduct” for AI.

Global leaders call for coordination — and caution

The debate has gone global. UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres said a “global coordination mechanism” is now indispensable. Pope Francis warned against delegating human moral responsibility to algorithms.

The U.S. president and members of his majority, however, have stressed their reluctance to impose strict limits on the sector, arguing that excessive regulation could allow China to gain an advantage. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has rejected calls to slow development, saying market forces and legal liability provide sufficient guardrails.
