Andy Burnham Becomes UK Prime Minister, Pledges Biggest Changes in 40 Years

The new Labour leader arrived at Downing Street to applause and immediately laid out a ten-year plan to reindustrialize Britain. First calls went to Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky

Andy Burnham took office as Britain’s new Prime Minister with a sweeping promise to deliver the most significant transformation in four decades. Addressing the crowd at Downing Street after a lengthy round of applause, he declared his intention to build a new political and economic model, reverse the negative turn of the 1980s, and reindustrialize the country.

Burnham committed to presenting a ten-year national development plan by the end of this year, tying his policy goals to concrete spending possibilities. Among the immediate measures he previewed were steps to end street homelessness and ease the pressure on families crushed by the cost of living.

The new Prime Minister framed his agenda around putting people first. He spoke of overhauling the education system to help young people enter the workforce, expanding mental health support, and maintaining fiscal discipline alongside defense commitments and international partnerships. “We will help people live well by building a state that prevents more and invests in success rather than paying for failure,” he said.

Burnham’s first call to a foreign leader went to US President Donald Trump, according to Sky News. The contents of the conversation were not disclosed. He also scheduled a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for the same day to reassure him of Britain’s steady and resolute support.

International congratulations arrived quickly. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni posted on X, offering best wishes and thanking outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer for strengthening ties between Italy and the United Kingdom. She highlighted collaboration on migration management and international crises, expressing confidence that the strategic partnership would continue to deepen.

French President Emmanuel Macron also welcomed Burnham, urging him to strengthen bonds with the European Union. “Faced with the challenges that unite us, I hope we can deepen our relationship in service of our peoples and give new momentum to the partnership between the United Kingdom and the European Union,” Macron wrote.

The three leaders of European institutions followed suit. European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola all offered their congratulations. Von der Leyen said she looked forward to working with Burnham to strengthen the EU-UK partnership for the security of their shared continent and the prosperity of people on both sides of the Channel. Metsola emphasized that the EU and Britain are stronger when working together as close partners and spoke of consolidating the positive momentum built in recent months.
