The devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck south-east Asia has caused a tragic toll, with over 1,002 confirmed dead in Myanmar, according to reports from the ruling junta. The quake caused widespread damage in the Mandalay region, and the death toll could rise as rescue operations progress.
The quake, which occurred at 2.20pm local time yesterday, destroyed buildings and infrastructure in Myanmar and severely damaged communications. The quake was also felt in Thailand and China, where a skyscraper under construction collapsed in Bangkok, killing at least seven workers. Thai authorities are trying to free more than 80 people still trapped under the rubble.
