New Year’s Eve massacre in New Orleans: the perpetrator identified is an American citizen

Pick-up truck attack on the crowd: at least 10 dead in central Bourbon Street. The attacker was armed and was carrying an Isis flag

The perpetrator of the New Year’s Eve massacre in New Orleans has been identified. Shamsud Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old American citizen from Texas, ran over the crowd celebrating the beginning of 2025 in a pick-up truck. At least 10 people lost their lives during the attack, which took place on the famous Bourbon Street, the beating heart of the city. According to CNN, Jabbar allegedly acted while carrying an Isis flag, and explosives were found on the vehicle, which was reportedly rented.

Who was Shamsud Din Jabbar?

Shamsud Din Jabbar, besides being an American citizen, has a past in the US army. An old video circulates on social media in which the man discusses his work at a real estate company, but in recent years he seems to have become radicalised. Isis claimed the attack through its media channels, and investigations into his possible involvement with the terrorist group are ongoing.

The firefight with the police

The New Orleans police promptly intervened and managed to stop Jabbar. After the impact with the crowd, the bomber opened fire on the intervening officers. In the ensuing shootout, Shamsud Din Jabbar was shot dead by the police. Two policemen were injured, but their condition is stable, the local police department confirmed.

Political reactions and Trump’s comment

While the investigation continues, US President-elect Donald Trump immediately linked the attack to the issue of illegal immigration. In a post on Truth Social, Trump reiterated his tough stance on the issue, stating: ‘I said that the criminals coming in are much worse than the ones we have in the country, and it turned out to be true’. He also stated that his Administration will support New Orleans in the investigation and recovery process after the attack, expressing solidarity with the victims and the officers involved.

The moments of the attack

New details emerge about the New Year’s Eve attack in New Orleans, when a man in a pick-up truck drove into the festive crowd in the French Quarter. After the impact, the attacker got out of the vehicle and started shooting, intending to cause carnage. This was revealed by Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans police, during a press conference.

Two police officers wounded

In the ensuing shootout, two police officers were wounded by gunshots. Both were hospitalised and their condition is stable, Kirkpatrick said.
