Kylian Mbappé cleared of rape charges: Swedish prosecutors close investigation

The Swedish judiciary closed the case against the French champion, confirming that the evidence was insufficient to proceed. The player had always declared himself calm and willing to cooperate with the authorities

Kylian Mbappé breathes a sigh of relief. The French Real Madrid striker, at the centre of a court case for alleged rape last October in Stockholm, has been officially cleared. The public prosecutor’s office in the Swedish capital announced today that the investigation is closed and that there is not enough evidence to proceed. The accusation, which had had a strong global media echo, seemed to have shaken public opinion, but the footballer had remained calm in recent days, stating that he had never received any notification from the local authorities. Mbappé had emphasised that he was available for clarification, but had always said he was calm about the successful outcome of the case.

Prosecutor Marina Chirakova, in charge of the investigation, clarified the situation in a statement: ‘In the course of the investigation, one person was reasonably suspected of rape and two cases of sexual harassment were identified. However, my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed further and, therefore, the investigation is closed’. Chirakova also pointed out that the person concerned never received a formal notification of suspicion of a criminal offence.
