Private Jet Crash Near Mar-a-Lago Leaves Nine Dead After Crew’s Final Plea
A Learjet en route from Texas to the Bahamas plunged into a South Florida neighborhood after pilots reported severe weather, icing and an uncontrolled descent, ending a frantic struggle that lasted less than a minute and raising urgent questions about what went wrong at 35,000 feet
A desperate series of mayday calls, an uncontrolled plunge from cruising altitude and a final admission that “we don’t have time” marked the last moments of a Learjet that crashed Sunday near Mar-a-Lago, killing all nine people aboard and leaving investigators searching for answers.
The aircraft was flying from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when the flight abruptly turned into an emergency over South Florida. Air traffic control recordings and flight-tracking data indicate the jet had been operating at 35,000 feet when the crew began reporting deteriorating conditions, including turbulence, icing and precipitation.
Within moments, the situation escalated dramatically.
The pilots requested permission to climb another 2,000 feet, but shortly afterward the aircraft exceeded expected speed limits and entered a steep descent. Radio transmissions captured the crew’s growing alarm as the jet rapidly lost altitude.
“We’re descending 8,000,” the pilot transmitted. Then came an even more urgent call: “Mayday, mayday … we’re descending at 10,000 feet per minute.”
The disaster unfolded with extraordinary speed. About 35 seconds after the initial distress call, the crew delivered a final message from the cockpit.
“We don’t have time.”
Seconds earlier, the pilot had issued an even bleaker warning.
“We’re going to hit the ground.”
At approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, the aircraft crashed near Cresthaven, not far from President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property, erupting into a massive fireball on impact. All nine occupants died.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show the jet diving nearly nose-first before exploding just yards from moving vehicles and close to residential homes. The footage captures a violent impact that narrowly missed structures in the surrounding neighborhood.
Officials arriving at the scene described a devastating crash site.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis called it a “catastrophic plane crash,” telling reporters the aircraft appeared to fall “like a missile” and left behind a large crater near the roadway.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy described the accident as a “horrible tragedy” as federal authorities began examining the circumstances that led to the crash.
Investigators have not determined what caused the aircraft to lose control. The inquiry is expected to focus on the crew’s reports of adverse weather, the aircraft’s performance during its final descent and the sequence of events captured in air traffic control communications.
For now, the final radio transmissions provide the clearest account of a flight crew struggling against a rapidly unfolding emergency before the aircraft plunged from the sky, ending in one of the deadliest private aviation accidents in South Florida in recent memory.
