Halloween Weekend Gun Violence Leaves 6 Dead, Dozens Injured Across U.S.

Fatal shootings in Texas, Alabama and California turned Halloween celebrations into crime scenes, underscoring a surge of violence that unfolded across multiple states within hours and left investigators searching for answers

What began as a weekend of Halloween celebrations across the United States ended with a trail of crime scenes stretching from Texas to California, as a series of unrelated mass shootings left at least six people dead and dozens wounded within a matter of hours.

The deadliest violence unfolded in Dallas, where three separate shootings rocked the city’s Deep Ellum entertainment district after Halloween festivities spilled into the early morning hours. According to Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux, at least four people were killed and about 15 others injured in attacks that occurred roughly 30 to 60 minutes apart. Authorities said the toll could rise because some victims transported themselves to hospitals before investigators could account for them.

Police said they have found no evidence linking the three shootings, despite their close proximity in time and location. Several people have been detained, witnesses are being interviewed and investigators are working to determine how the attacks unfolded and who was responsible.

The gunfire in Dallas was only part of a broader night of bloodshed.

In Birmingham, Alabama, a separate shooting erupted outside Legion Field following the Magic City Classic, the annual college football rivalry between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University, two historically Black institutions. The area surrounding the stadium remained crowded with fans and vendors after the game when shots rang out, killing one person and wounding eight others.

One victim remained in critical condition, while the other injured individuals were reported to be stable and not facing life-threatening injuries. Police detained and questioned a suspect and recovered multiple firearms at the scene, though authorities said the motive remains unknown.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett described the violence as “two senseless acts of violence. Completely senseless.”

City officials moved quickly to clear the area and suspend remaining activities around the stadium. Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned the shooting, saying there was no dispute, rivalry or misunderstanding that could justify such violence during a public celebration, and vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Hundreds of miles away in Fairfield, California, another shooting added to the mounting toll. One person was killed and six others were injured after gunfire erupted inside a Spirit Halloween store located in a shopping center on Oct. 31.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said three of the victims were hospitalized in critical condition.

The incidents appear unrelated, and authorities in each jurisdiction are conducting separate investigations. Yet together they transformed one of the year’s most heavily attended holiday weekends into a succession of emergency responses, hospitalizations and homicide inquiries across multiple states.

By the time investigators began piecing together what had happened, six people had lost their lives, dozens more had been wounded, and communities in Texas, Alabama and California were left confronting the aftermath of another wave of gun violence that struck without warning during what had been expected to be a night of celebration.
