Trump White House Media Ban Triggers Lawsuit From CNN, Politico, and MS NOW
The three news organizations accuse the administration of violating press freedom after their reporters were barred from the White House and stripped of access credentials
A growing dispute between the White House and major news organizations has moved into federal court as CNN, Politico, and MS NOW launch legal action over what they describe as an unconstitutional restriction on press access.
The lawsuit targets President Donald Trump and three senior administration officials after reporters from the three outlets were denied entry to the White House and had their press credentials revoked. According to the organizations, the measure violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which safeguards freedom of the press.
In a joint statement, the outlets said they had filed suit in a federal court in Washington, seeking urgent judicial intervention to restore access for their journalists. The filing asks the court to act quickly and reinstate the reporters’ ability to work from the White House while the case proceeds.
The media organizations contend that the decision was imposed without prior notice and without any formal process. They also argue that the action was connected to the content of their reporting on the Trump administration.
The move to exclude the journalists was announced by Trump last Friday on the social platform Truth. At the time, the president accused CNN, Politico, and MS NOW of publishing “fake news” but did not provide specific examples or detailed justification for the decision.
The complaint names Trump, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, and Secret Service Director Sean Curran as defendants.
