FDNY demands answers on 9/11 air quality deception after new documents emerge
Fire officers accuse New York authorities of knowingly misleading the public about asbestos levels at Ground Zero
The New York City Fire Department is demanding explanations after newly released documents from the administration of Zohran Mamdani revealed that city authorities misled the public about air quality at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Despite official assurances at the time, firefighters and residents were breathing asbestos, according to the records.
“We are incredulous. It is shocking that they did this to us,” said James Brosi, president of the Uniformed Fire Officers Association. “They sacrificed citizens and first responders. We were dying with every breath, and they knew it — but they chose to protect the city’s economy instead.”
Brosi accused city leaders of making a “conscious choice in the name of the economy,” adding that “four administrations turned their backs on us” by denying that the air was toxic.
The documents suggest that officials were aware of hazardous contamination but continued to reassure the public that the air was safe, prioritizing economic stability and the reopening of Lower Manhattan. The revelations have reignited long‑standing anger among firefighters, many of whom suffer chronic illnesses linked to exposure at the site.
The FDNY is now pressing for full accountability and transparency, arguing that thousands of responders were put at risk by decisions made at the highest levels of city government. The union says it will continue to push for answers — and for recognition of the consequences endured by those who worked at Ground Zero.
