A False AI Report Nearly Led U.S. Forces to Intercept Chinese Ship after an intelligence assessment generated with the assistance of artificial intelligence wrongly concluded that a Chinese vessel in the Middle East was carrying components linked to a nuclear weapons program.
According to CNN, citing four sources familiar with the matter, the report circulated within the U.S. military during the conflict with Iran and prompted preparations for an interception operation. Two sources, speaking anonymously, said American personnel were preparing to board the vessel, while military aircraft had already been deployed ahead of the planned mission.
The operation came to a halt only after officials took a closer look at the assessment shortly before it was set to proceed. That review found the document, prepared by an analyst attached to Special Operations Command, had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence and that a chatbot had incorrectly identified the ship’s cargo.
One source described the assessment as “completely false,” adding that it had “almost triggered a war.” A U.S. action against a Chinese vessel, the source said, carried the risk of escalating into a direct military confrontation between Washington and Beijing.
The episode underscores concerns surrounding the use of artificial intelligence in intelligence analysis, as analysts have long warned that inaccurate AI-generated conclusions could contribute to serious miscalculations by governments relying on flawed data.
