Four women allege criminal sexual conduct by the Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman in incidents that occurred when they were teenagers. Nine of ten interviewed women are speaking publicly for the first time
Four women have accused Jared Leto of criminal sexual conduct in incidents that occurred when they were teenagers, according to a BBC documentary that airs testimony from ten women, nine of whom are speaking publicly for the first time.
The documentary, titled “Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret,” includes allegations spanning more than a decade. One woman says Leto sexually assaulted her in a motel bathroom in 2002, when she was 17. Another alleges that Leto, then 41, threatened her with sexual violence during a hotel room encounter in 2013, when she was 19.
A third woman describes having sexual relations with the actor at age 17 in California, a circumstance that could constitute statutory rape under state law, where the age of consent is 18. She claims Leto had previously dismissed a conversation about the age of consent. A fourth accuser reports being subjected to alleged grooming at age 16 through sexually explicit phone calls. She also says she was later offered a non-disclosure agreement to prevent her from speaking about her relationship with the actor, a document she refused to sign.
The BBC reports it has corroborated elements of the testimonies through friends and family members whom the women told at the time of the alleged incidents, and has examined photographs and messages supporting their accounts.
Leto, 54, did not respond to the BBC’s requests for comment on the allegations. The actor won an Academy Award for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club” and has fronted the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars since 1998.
