Crisis Middle East: Iran Closes Hormuz and the U.S. Launches an Attack

Tehran halts traffic through a critical global shipping route after an incident involving a commercial vessel. Washington responds with a new round of military strikes

Tensions sharply escalated in the Persian Gulf early Sunday, July 12, after Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, while the United States launched a new series of military strikes on Iranian targets under orders from President Donald Trump.

The crisis intensified following an incident involving a commercial vessel transiting the narrow waterway. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had fired a “warning shot” at a ship it claimed was navigating outside authorized routes. Officials in Tehran described the move as a response to what they called increasing foreign interference in the region.

In a statement carried by the Tasnim news agency, Iran’s naval forces declared that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until further notice. Authorities said the decision was necessary due to what they described as unlawful actions by foreign powers, specifically pointing to the United States. Iranian officials also stated that no military vessels would be permitted to pass through the strait during this period.

The United States offered a starkly different account. US Central Command accused Iranian forces of attacking the M/V GFS Galaxy, a Cyprus-flagged container ship traveling through the strait. According to Washington, the vessel sustained significant damage, including an onboard fire and serious engine room impacts, and one crew member is reported missing.

US officials characterized the incident as a serious breach of international maritime norms and announced the beginning of what they described as the third round of strikes against Iranian targets within a week. The Pentagon said the operations are aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.

The strikes, authorized directly by President Trump, have reportedly hit strategic locations in Iran, with explosions reported in the cities of Bushehr and Asaluyeh, both key hubs for the country’s energy infrastructure. The extent of the damage remains unclear.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s supply passing through it. Any disruption, even temporary, raises immediate concerns for global energy markets and increases the risk of broader regional instability.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation as fears grow over the potential for further escalation between Tehran and Washington, with significant implications for global trade and security.
