Trump: Strait of Hormuz Reopens Friday, Migrant Remarks Stir G7 Debate

The U.S. president confirms the strategic waterway will fully reopen while comments on migration and global trade tensions overshadow the G7 in Évian

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the Strait of Hormuz will be “fully open on Friday,” speaking during bilateral discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Évian.

Trump said mine-clearing operations are still ongoing, but maritime traffic has already started to resume. “We’re still taking care of a couple of mines, but ships are already starting to go out,” he said, adding that relations with Iran and its new leadership are now “very good.”

The U.S. president stressed that no tolls will be imposed on passage through the waterway and reiterated that navigation must remain free. He also referred to the possibility of an international naval presence, while downplaying its necessity. “I don’t think it’s a bad idea to have one or two ships from some countries there,” he said.

Trump also left open the possibility of attending the signing ceremony for the Iran agreement scheduled for Friday, June 19, in Switzerland, noting that Vice President JD Vance had been expected to attend in his place.

On energy markets, Trump said oil prices are falling following the agreement with Tehran, returning closer to pre-conflict levels. He described the situation in Lebanon as a “mini version” of the Iran conflict, adding that it “should not be difficult” to address and that talks involving Hezbollah may be necessary.

On Ukraine, Trump said there may still be room for diplomatic progress. “Maybe we can do something. I think both Putin and Zelensky are open,” he said, linking potential developments to the outcome of the Iran deal.

Tensions also emerged at the G7 over Trump’s comments on migration, posted on Truth Social during his flight to France. “If you import people from Third World countries, you become Third World,” he wrote, triggering political reactions among leaders gathered in Évian.

French President Emmanuel Macron said France will support the Iran agreement, calling it “a very important step for global peace and the global economy,” as discussions continue among G7 leaders.

Trump arrived at the summit in Évian-les-Bains, greeting reporters with a brief “Everything is very nice.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also attending the summit, while Macron met Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the event.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for stronger protection against “unfair practices,” highlighting critical raw materials as a strategic area requiring coordinated action among G7 countries.
