The first article focused on the wedding of Dua Lipa and Callum Turner in Sicily, with events taking place between Palermo and Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria. The piece included references to the villa as a “former stronghold of Cosa Nostra” and to the area’s mafia past. This framing sparked criticism for emphasizing organised crime associations in the context of a celebrity event.
Only a few days later, the British newspaper published a new feature in its travel section based on a comparative study of 50 islands and more than 30 evaluation criteria. In this case, Sicily was described as “the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean, according to those who live there”.
The contrast between the two articles is immediate and has reignited criticism over the publication’s editorial consistency, with accusations of a simplified and heavily stereotyped narrative in the first piece, followed by a complete reversal in tone.
In the second article, Sicily is portrayed as a “crossroads of gastronomy, architecture and culture”, characterised by a “slow and authentic” lifestyle, in clear contrast with the previous framing.
The close timing of the two publications has turned the case into a matter of editorial credibility rather than a simple change of perspective. A rather embarrassing misstep, indeed.
