Washington halts green card and citizenship processing amid US immigration application suspension
The US immigration application suspension announced this week affects citizens from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Somalia, and Venezuela. Both green card and citizenship requests are on hold, as the government enforces travel restrictions previously introduced by President Donald Trump in June.
Countries affected by the US immigration application suspension
The measure covers Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. According to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, these applications will not be processed until further notice while authorities review security and compliance concerns.
Presidential remarks on the suspension
President Trump commented on Somali immigration during a cabinet meeting: “I don’t want them in our country. I’ll be honest with you. Some will say, ‘Oh, this isn’t politically correct.’ I don’t care.” He criticised Somalia as a “country with no structure” and attacked Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American elected to Congress, calling her obsession “disturbing.”
Political reactions
Congresswoman Omar responded on social media, describing Trump’s remarks as worrying and highlighting the need for intervention. The US immigration application suspension has prompted criticism from migrant rights groups and lawmakers concerned about its effect on families and affected communities.
