Coca-Cola launches a version with cane sugar: ‘Choice influenced by Trump’

The US president pushes for a new drink without corn syrup: debut in autumn

Coca-Cola will launch a new version of its iconic drink in autumn, sweetened with US cane sugar instead of the traditional high-fructose corn syrup. This was confirmed by the CEO of the giant, James Quincey, who acknowledged the influence of President Donald Trump in the decision.

The classic recipe will remain unchanged, the company said, describing it as a “complementary” line to expand the range and meet new consumer preferences. Trump, known to consume up to 12 cans of Diet Coke a day, had publicly promoted the use of “real sugar”, criticising the effects of processed corn on public health.

However, according to industry experts, the change in sweetener does not bring any real health benefits. ‘It’s not the type of sugar that’s the problem, but the amount,’ Eva Greenthal of the Centre for Science in the Public Interest told CNN.

The choice could have significant economic effects. In the US, highly subsidised corn is cheaper than sugar, which is why it has been preferred for decades. The corn industry has already criticised the announcement: ‘It puts thousands of jobs at risk,’ warned the Corn Refiners Association.

Despite supply concerns, Coca-Cola has assured that it has sufficient reserves to meet initial demand. The new product could change the balance in the soft drink market, which is worth around $285 billion in the US alone.
