Giorgia Meloni’s visit to the White House, scheduled for tomorrow, is seen by the New York Times as a potential turning point in relations between Italy and the United States under President Trump. According to the newspaper, the mission of the Italian premier – the latest in a series of European leaders who have tried to get closer to the current US president – raises “more hopes than fears” due to the “unique position she occupies on the continent”.
Her right-wing political background – notes the NYT – has long placed her as a possible natural ally of Trump, so much so that she was among the few European leaders invited to the inauguration ceremony.
