Pope Francis in stable condition, but prognosis remains reserved

Pontiff hospitalised for bilateral pneumonia at Gemelli since 14 February: doctors confirm a complex but stable picture

Pope Francis, hospitalised since 14 February for bilateral pneumonia, continues to receive treatment at Rome’s Gemelli hospital. The Pontiff’s condition is stable, with no signs of respiratory failure or bronchospasm, according to a statement from the Vatican. Despite the improvement, the prognosis remains reserved as the clinical picture is described as complex and doctors do not rule out the possibility of further crises.

Ongoing therapies and constant monitoring

The Vatican informed that Pope Francis has no fever and remains vigilant and cooperative with the therapies. The Pontiff has started high-flow oxygen therapy and continues respiratory physiotherapy to improve his lung function. In line with the treatment plan, he will receive non-invasive mechanical ventilation during the night to ensure adequate rest. Although there have been some bronchospasms, the doctors consider them normal in a bilateral pneumonia setting.

Prayer and rest: the Pontiff’s day

Despite the seriousness of his condition, Pope Francis alternated moments of prayer and rest during the day. This morning he received the Eucharist, keeping his spiritual connection alive even in a time of illness.

Video recorded before admission released

Meanwhile, a pre-recorded video was released in which Pope Francis expresses his intention to pray for the family. The footage, which includes stock footage of the Pontiff, was edited ‘out of respect for the Pope’, as Vatican sources stated, taking into account his current hospitalisation.
