Kamala Harris certifies Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election

The outgoing vice president officially announces Trump’s election with 312 votes, ending Joe Biden’s term in office

Kamala Harris officially certified Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election on 5 November during a joint session of Congress. As president of the Senate, the outgoing vice-president presided over the session that sanctioned Trump’s victory with 312 electoral votes against Harris’ 226.

The certification, greeted by applause from Republicans, marks the end of the Biden administration’s term and the beginning of the transition to the new Trump-led government. During the ceremony, Harris read out the official results, also eliciting applause from Democrats as he announced his own result.

As Congress confirmed his victory, Trump published several posts on Truth Social, accusing Joe Biden of obstructing the transition through executive orders related to environmental policy, calling the plan a ‘Green New Scam’. Trump reassured his supporters that these orders would soon be rescinded, promising a return to the ‘nation of common sense and strength’.

The certification of Trump’s victory concludes an election that has seen intense competition, with the former president poised to return to the White House after his first term.
