Deadly shark attack in New Caledonia: 40-year-old man killed

A 40-year-old man from New Caledonia, originally from the island of Maré, died after being severely injured by a shark. The attack occurred on the islet of Kendek

A tragic shark attack took place yesterday in northern New Caledonia, where a 40-year-old man was seriously injured while spearfishing on the islet of Kendek, located in the northern area of the French Overseas Territory in the Pacific. The man, originally from the island of Maré, was with his family when he was attacked by the shark, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Seriously injured in the arm and unconscious, the 40-year-old was rushed by his relatives to Koumac, a town located on the main island of Grande Terre. There, he was rescued by the fire brigade and volunteer rescuers. However, due to the closure of the emergency room of the Koumac hospital, which has not been operational since 1 January due to a lack of medical staff, it was necessary to send an emergency medical team from Nouméa, in the south of the island.

Despite attempts to resuscitate him, the doctor who arrived from Nouméa declared the man dead at 18:40 local time. The man did not survive the injuries he sustained during the attack.

The public prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to shed light on the exact cause of death and to identify the species of shark involved in the attack. Only a few months earlier, last June, another fatal shark attack had occurred in the Poindimié area in the north-east of Grande Terre. On that occasion, a kitesurfing man had drowned before his body was attacked by multiple sharks.
