Cuba and Bolivia officially join BRICS as associate countries

The economic bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, also welcomes Cuba and Bolivia as new partner countries

Cuba has been officially welcomed as an associate country in the BRICS economic bloc, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Cuba’s entry coincides with that of Bolivia, the only two Latin American nations among the nine admitted as of 1 January 2025. This decision had been agreed at the October summit in Kazan.

According to the Cuban news site Cubadebate, joining BRICS+ represents an important opportunity for Cuba to circumvent the US economic embargo. The Cuban government emphasises that the possibility of trading with local currencies will reduce dependence on the dollar and allow the island to expand trade flows with partner countries.
