Luigi Mangione professes innocence and refuses extradition for Brian Thompson murder

The 26-year-old Italian-American, indicted for the murder of Brian Thompson in Manhattan, refuses extradition from Pennsylvania to New York, slowing the legal process

Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old Italian-American arrested for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan last week, will fight extradition from Pennsylvania to New York. The legal move, orchestrated by his lawyer Thomas Dickey, will slow down the transfer and allow the defence to organise itself with more time. During the hearing, Mangione shouted against the bail denial, expressing frustration.

Defence and charges against Mangione

According to his lawyer, Mangione will plead not guilty to the charges in both states, invoking the presumption of innocence. Despite the evidence found at the time of his arrest – a phantom gun, a mask similar to the killer’s, and a false New Jersey identity – Dickey claims there is no concrete evidence linking Mangione directly to the murder. New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she will sign the request to force the extradition.
