RJ Mitte Dead at 34: Breaking Bad Actor and Disability Advocate Dies in Texas
The performer who brought Walter White Jr. to life on one of television’s most acclaimed dramas leaves behind a career defined by acting and advocacy
For millions of viewers, RJ Mitte will always be remembered as Walter White Jr., the son caught in the widening fallout of his father’s double life in Breaking Bad. The actor, whose portrayal became one of the defining performances of the landmark series, has died at 34.
TMZ reported that Mitte died Monday in Texas and, citing a county official, said authorities believe the death was a suicide. Confirmation that the actor had died later came from his representatives, who released a statement honoring a career that extended far beyond television.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, RJ Mitte,” the statement said.
Although his name became inseparable from Breaking Bad, Mitte’s impact on the industry was shaped as much by his personal story as by his acting work. He lived with cerebral palsy, having been diagnosed at age 3 after suffering brain damage at birth. When Vince Gilligan cast him as Walter “Flynn” White Jr., the son of the characters portrayed by Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn, Mitte brought firsthand experience to a role that resonated with audiences throughout the show’s run.
Over 56 episodes, his performance helped place disability representation before a global audience while avoiding many of the stereotypes that had long characterized such portrayals on screen. That commitment remained central to his public life long after Breaking Bad ended.
His representatives highlighted a years-long effort to expand awareness and inclusion for people with disabilities. In addition to serving as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, Mitte led the Mitte Foundation as president, supporting philanthropic initiatives and community projects. The statement noted that he consistently used his visibility to challenge assumptions about disability and advocate for broader representation in entertainment and public life.
“RJ Mitte was best known for his role as Walter ‘Flynn’ White Jr. in the award-winning series Breaking Bad. Drawing inspiration from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the character and built a platform for awareness and inclusion for people with disabilities,” the statement said.
The actor remained professionally active until the final weeks of his life. Days before his death, he appeared on podcasts promoting his latest film, Talking to Strangers. His career also included the Netflix series The Guardians of Justice, a recurring part in Switched at Birth, and film roles in The Recall (2017) and The Oak Room (2020). Several additional projects were reportedly in pre-production.
The statement released by his representatives concluded with a request for privacy for those closest to him as they mourn his loss.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, and later adopted, Mitte is survived by his fiancée, Kennedy Suarez. The couple had been together since 2018 and were officially engaged.
