Hayden Panettiere’s death tied to possible fentanyl‑laced oxycodone, TMZ reports
Sources say the actress may have taken a counterfeit pill before her August death; toxicology results still pending
The death of actress Hayden Panettiere may be linked to a fentanyl‑laced oxycodone pill, according to information shared with TMZ by sources familiar with the case. Panettiere, 36, died in August. Investigators are now examining whether she unknowingly consumed a counterfeit pill obtained through an illicit supplier.
Sources told TMZ that Panettiere had been purchasing prescription‑grade drugs on the black market from a long‑time acquaintance in Los Angeles, who allegedly provided her with various controlled substances. According to these accounts, Panettiere took multiple substances during her flight from Los Angeles to South Carolina on August 16, the day before she died.
Authorities reportedly believe she may have taken an oxycodone pill possibly adulterated with fentanyl on the morning of her death. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid linked to a high number of fatal overdoses in the United States, is frequently found in counterfeit pills sold through illegal channels.
The Los Angeles field office of the DEA is now investigating Panettiere’s alleged supplier, attempting to reconstruct their interactions and determine whether criminal charges may follow.
Law‑enforcement sources cited by TMZ have urged caution, stressing that these details remain preliminary. Toxicology results — which could confirm or contradict the fentanyl hypothesis — have not yet been released. For now, investigators consider this the leading line of inquiry, but not a definitive conclusion.
