He Was Washing Dishes in New York. Now He’s About to Walk Across America
After more than four months on the road, 29-year-old Chantz Rivera is nearing the end of a remarkable coast-to-coast journey that began with a backpack, a tent and a decision to leave his old life behind
SAN FRANCISCO — Five months ago, Chantz Rivera was washing dishes in New York City.
Today, the 29-year-old is less than 100 miles from completing something most people would never attempt: walking across the United States.
Since leaving New York in May with nothing but a backpack and a tent, Rivera has covered thousands of miles on foot, averaging about 20 miles a day as he made his way west toward California. His journey, documented on social media, has drawn growing attention from Americans fascinated by a story that feels increasingly rare in an age of convenience and constant connectivity.
The trek has tested him physically and mentally.
Rivera says he has worn through four pairs of shoes, endured extreme weather and faced moments when quitting seemed like the most reasonable option. One of the toughest challenges came in Colorado, where severe storms left him questioning whether he could continue.
“There were definitely times when I thought about stopping,” Rivera said. “But I found a way to keep going.”
Before he became known online for crossing America on foot, Rivera was living a routine life in New York. The idea for the journey emerged from a desire to break free from that routine and experience something larger than himself.
“Instead of feeling trapped in my city, I decided to leave and see the world,” he said.
Along the way, he has met thousands of people, many of whom offered encouragement, food, supplies or simply a conversation. Those encounters, Rivera says, have become as meaningful as the miles themselves.
Now the finish line is finally in sight.
With San Francisco just days away, Rivera hopes to reach the Pacific Ocean before Halloween. When he does, the moment will mark the end of a journey that has consumed nearly half a year and transformed an ordinary worker into an unlikely symbol of perseverance.
“I’ll put my feet in the Pacific Ocean,” Rivera said. “That’s going to be emotional.”
For most people, walking across America sounds impossible. For Rivera, it is now only a matter of finishing the last few miles.
