Australian MP Helen Haines Seriously Injured in Wangaratta Vehicle Attack
Police arrested the driver and recovered a knife from the vehicle after the incident outside the independent lawmaker’s electorate office
Independent Australian lawmaker Helen Haines suffered serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, prompting the arrest of the driver and a police investigation into what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described as a “serious attack.”
Victoria Police said the incident occurred in front of Haines’ electoral office. Officers took the driver into custody at the scene and recovered a knife from inside the vehicle.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the attack, but police said Haines was seriously injured when the vehicle struck her.
The incident quickly drew a response from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who publicly condemned the attack and expressed support for the independent member of Parliament and those close to her.
“My thoughts are with Helen, her family, friends, staff and community at this difficult time,” Albanese said during a news conference.
Investigators continue to examine the events surrounding the attack as authorities work to determine the full circumstances behind the incident in Wangaratta.
